ABOUT COLOMBIA

Colombia lies in a privileged geographical location. It has two coastlines along the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, and is bordered to the East by Venezuela (2,219 km), to the Southeast by Brazil (1,645 km), to the South by Peru (1,626 km), to the Southwest by Ecuador (585 km) and to the Northwest by Panama (266 km).  Colombia has three mountain ranges, tropical and cloud rain forests and vast savannas.

Due to its varied ecosystems, Colombia is the second most biologically diverse country in the world.

 

  • It holds third place in the number of living species and second place in birds species
  • Colombia has nearly 40,000 plant species, equivalent to 20% of plant species on the planet
  • Colombia has a vast National System of Protected Areas that includes natural parks, reserves and sanctuaries of fauna and flora

 

Colombia counts eight UNESCO World Cultural Heritage for Humanity sites and intangible cultural expressions. These include:

  • The Carnival in Barranquilla
  • The colonial port, fortress and monuments of Cartagena
  • The village of San Basilio de Palenque
  • Tierradentro Archaeological National Park
  • Historic Center of Santa Cruz de Mompox
  • Los Katíos National Park
  • Malpelo Fauna and Flora Sanctuary
  • San Agustín Archaeological Park
